Information:
Here's an incredible guitar and piece of history. This McCarty model from 1994 comes from the very first batch of McCarty models ever built and was given to Paul reed Smith rep for center USA Jim Greenhill as a rep instrument in 1994. This guitar belonged to Jim until very recently, and shows only the slightest signs it was ever played. No nicks, dings, or buckle rash.
This as new guitar comes with the handwritten signatures of both Ted McCarty and Paul Reed Smith on the backplate.
The top is also amazing and shows incredible and wide flames. Very unusual tridimensional flames and shapes. there's also a handwritten model name "McCarty" on the back of the headstock.
This wonderfull guitar features a wide-fat 22-fret neck only, East coast maple top, 1/8th of an inch thicker mahogany back, stop-tail, vintage-style tuners, rounded corner PRS McCarty humbuckers and 3-way toggle pickup selector. Built in 1994, there is no push/pull coil-tap on the tone control which is original to the first of the McCarty models.
This guitar comes with its original case in new condition and all the original hand tags, papers and documentations.
Ted McCarty (1910 – 2001) was a pioneer of electric guitar design and production. This began when he was chosen as Vice President of the of Gibson Guitar Corporation in 1949, then later as President in 1950. He remained President until 1966. This period became known as Gibson's golden age of electric guitars. During his tenure, Les Paul's electric guitar design, the first solid-body guitar produced by Gibson, came to fruition. Then the ES-335 was created as a "semi-hollow" and McCarty was also responsible for the development of the Tune-o-matic bridge system, the humbucking pickup, the Explorer, Flying V, Moderne, SG and Firebird guitars.
In 1966 McCarty retired from Gibson and became President of the Bigsby Company. Later Paul Reed Smith found out about McCarty during a visit to the U.S. Patent office in the early 1980s, where he kept noticing McCarty's name among Gibson's patents. Smith later hired McCarty as a consultant, and credits his experience with McCarty as a defining moment in his company. In 1994, Paul Reed Smith's company PRS Guitars, launched the McCarty model as a tribute to Ted. Previously, no instrument or company ever bore his name.
